How to have a meaningful, memorable conversation with anyone, especially a girl on date?

1). Ummm, I suggest you start off with fluency. When you speak speak fluently and with no pauses. Avoid as much as possible all the "ummm" moments.

2). Look straight in the eyes. (looking in several other directions -> insecurity/ nervousness/ lack of confidence)

3). Gesticulate a little but don't overdo it. (avoid constantly adjusting yourself in the chair or playing with things in your hands.

4). Take up some space! Don't keep your hands crossed in front of your chest or your legs crossed and try not to bend over the table. Stand up straight (as straight as you find it comfortable) and rest your hands on the chair's handles. The goal is to appear relaxed and comfortable while also suggesting a bit that you have the situation under control.

5). Don't calculate it! Don't force yourself into finding subjects of discussion. Let things flow; but try and keep in mind that you're talking to a girl not to your beer buddy :P.

Any of the above can be broken to almost no extent as long as you're doing great in the other rules.

Regarding your friend: I'm relatively sure his success is not what he says but THE WAY he says it. The above, if done relatively correctly, will get the attention of the girl.

For making things memorable:

1). You must appear smart and "bored". The idea of boredom here is that the given situation (party with friends/ club/ movie) isn't quite that much of a challenge/ interest for you but you decided to tag along randomly. -> this is what she must understand

2). Don't be a chatterbox. Talking too much isn't a turn on.

3). NO FEAR! I discovered this talking to friends and lurking around seddit. Risk everything when you feel like it! Example: you talked over a coffee; you're leaving the place to go home/ do something else; after you exit, grab her hand! She will either: accept it, look at you a bit amazed but intrigued (maybe even smile), retreat her hand and look pissed off a bit.

Case 1: you've won my friend. Whatever you do from here on (aka try a kiss) she will go for it.

Case 2: she's leaning towards case 1 but she's not convinced yet. She will prolly ask you what are you doing holding her hand. Look straight at her and tell her you felt like doing it.

Case 3: don't push any harder (at least for now). She's not interested/ had a bad day/ etc.
