How to smoothly eject from a failed approach?

What's the purpose of ejecting 'smoothly'? Just tell them you have to head back to your friends or whatever so it doesn't look like you got totally blown out but it doesn't matter that much.

If you are working under the guise of being social, ejecting is assumed. If you stay it becomes weird or she catches your interest.

If you stay stationary then do a couple approaches, you may need a way to eject, which everyone else had great answers.
