If she’s your colleague, that means you may see her often. You don’t have to be hard mode on escalation. I would do the same as your plan.

One thing guys tend to overlook is how to keep the conversation flowing. I mean look at this sub, people ask things like “what question do I use” or “what opener..” like there’s some kind of mantra or spells to create a miracle. These are just variants of “pickup lines” where people stopped asking because clearly they don’t work.

When you keep your conversation flowing, you can get any information you want. For example if you want to know if she’s single, there’s a lot of things around you that you could use to direct the conversation the way you want it. You can use 2-3 statements back and forth before you get to your point:

You: “look at that car. My nephew loves that kinda car”

Her: “Oh yeah how old is he?”

You: “He’s 5. He’s a smart kid. Do you have any kids by the way?”

Her: “No not really. I’m not big into kids, tho”

Or…

You: “do you see the woman over there? She reminds me of brother’s ex. Something interesting about her. Maybe the way she smiles or her curly hair.”

Usually a woman would say something like: “She’s pretty.” Or “do you think she’s pretty?”

Then you go: “Yeah. He’s still not over her I guess. They were actually a good couple. Speaking of couples, are you currently in a relationship?”

The bottom line is you don’t have to do interview-style questions to make her spill everything like in an interrogation, but to have the mindset trained to jump from a topic to another because the topics share commonalities (look at the bold words I use). If you do this often, you’ll find yourselves talk about almost anything, from arts to kids to food to music to family dynamics.
