Talk. Talk to everybody. Talk to dudes- nice kicks, cool car, nod head. Talk to the cashier lady- how are you today, I like your broach, these strawberries are great, lovely sweater. Talk. Get used to speaking to everyone with absolutely no expectations of results. Make chat with zero risk, be polite, don't be needy.

Stand up straight, speak clearly, work on posture. Keep one foot turned toward your next intended destination. Do not compliment looks.

Engage on emotional level- you clearly like blue, is it fun being in charge of all these people?, Pears are underrated, I should eat more of them, they smell so good, so relaxing.

Approaching without apprehension or expectation can become natural if you stop treating interactions as life or death.

Remember: you are responsible for you. Think of yourself as two people, the coach and the student; the coach forces the student to go through the process of learning while the student does the exercises until they get a feeling of their own style.

Eye contact is vastly overrated as a sign of interest. It could mean curiosity, apprehension, or even hostility.

As just one example, eye contact from a latino girl may signal interest, while the avoidance of eye contact by an Asian woman may indicate attraction.

Even simple touching is not a sure sign of interest or attraction.

My great epiphany was realizing—and this may seem morbid—was that prince or pauper, beauty or beast, millionaire or miser, we were all in the same boat. We were inevitably going to grow old, get sick, die, and on that path know loss and heartache.

In the only way that mattered, we were all connected by our fragile humanity.

Walking up to a state beauty queen who I didn’t know and saying, “I heard about your sister, I am so sorry” was effortless as was noticing a pretty girl grimacing as she tried to stow a carryon in the overhead bin and saying, “Here, sit down, let me help you with that.”

Instead of scattering conversation around like buckshot, try empathy. Pick your spots—the teller at the bank who just dealt with an asshole; the crossing guard being baked by the sun or bucking a wind chill of -14.

“Attention must be payed.”

Your world has no end of people who are hungering for even a minute of connection.

Just keep your eyes open.
