This took place in the caf at my college.

I walk in, and notice she's sitting alone at one of the long tables. She's cute, a 7 or 8.

So I go and get my food, and sit at the other end of the table, across from her, about 5 seats away.

Suddenly, an acquaintance from my Political Science class sits across from me. This dude loves politics, hardcore. Wanted to talk about policy or whatever. I like that stuff too, so I'm like fine, and we talk politics a bit. He's super animated and it's kind of comical. During this conversation I glanced over toward her and made eye contact.

She smiled, because politics guy was excited and I was humoring him. I smiled back. So, I continued our conversation until she finished her lunch and got up to leave.

I excused myself, and caught up to her in the hallway.

I said something to the effect of, "that guy's in my American Government class, he likes to hear himself talk. But I would much rather have spent my lunch hour talking with you. You have a beautiful smile."

She thanked me for the complement, after which I introduced myself, and asked her what her name was. After our introductions, she said "see you around" and started walking off to wherever she was going.

Then I asked for her number. Got it.

Returned to my lunch and conversation. I consider this instance an achievement because of the smooth eye contact and execution of the approach despite the negative factors of political chatter and my unwitting "wingman".
