Is talking to random strangers the only strategy ?

There is no right/wrong answer. I never date friends of CLOSE friends nor any family members of friends. The majority of the girls I date are usually friends of friends (but like I said, not CLOSE friends) considering I'm still in college and that's just the nature of the beast.

I have had a handful of girls at work want to date me, but I don't shit where I eat, so that's off too.

Aside from that, it may be some girl I met in class that I cliqued with, some girl I met while recruiting, or a girl I see frequently enough and have minimal conversation with.

I find the best ONS or short-term flings are from random girls I meet.

Of course, this sub is about numbers. You can only know so many people at once and strangers are the best (usually less "baggage", less people in common, more options) when it comes to meeting girls.

Pick up and cold approaching aren't the same thing. Cold approaching is a topic within pick up. There's also social circle game which involves warm approaching. Stack your social circle with opportunities to be warmly introduced to new girls. Then you proceed with pick up. This is how most people naturally get girlfriends. The difference between us and normal guys is that we're not settling for the first homely girl who shows interest in us. We're using pick up to go after the creme of the crop.

Also being good at cold approaching naturally makes you better at dealing with girls in social circles.

Cold approaching allows you to sharpen your skills without having to bump in to those girls again as there will be a lot of "failures" along the way.

Social circle is easier due to comfort, however can be awkward if she does not feel the same way, so more is at stake.
