Can't specifically answer your question on whether there is/isn't scientific evidence, but as I get older and more experienced, I've learned that the whole term alpha/beta has become much too of a general catch-all phrase perpetuated in recent years to sell the idea that there are "haves" and "have-nots"

Fact is, what is considered alpha/beta is often extremely relative - sometimes based on setting (a successful business leader at a business symposium may be a rockstar "alpha" to females in the crowd, whereas him in a club may just make him another "beta"), sometimes based on context (the guy getting an award for doing something nice in front of a large audience may get a lot of attraction, even if what he is being awarded for may be "beta" in its actions).

It's impossible to make "scientific" generalizations about human beings, because we are incredibly complex creatures and there are too many confounding variables. If there is a line of women after the Jay-Z concert trying to fuck Jay-Z, who can tell if they are there because he is the "alpha" or because they like his music?

No it's actually Alpha, Beta and Omega. Beta is actually still a good rank that usually does get good potential mating partners. Omegas are the runts. It is not even close to science the way this subreddit considers alpha/beta. Lookup Alpha(ethology) in wiki.

It's just different definitions used colloquially vs the science. Everyone knows what an alpha male is and what a beta male is, even if the definitions are implicit and not scientific. It is just short hand versus having to redefine a particular type of male over and over and over again.

It's more like Alpha, Beta, Zeta.

In human history a few Alpha males got numerous wives/concubines/etc. A large number of Betas got their one lifetime partner. Then, a large number of Zetas (about 40% of the total male population) got no one. There weren't enough women to go around because the Alphas were hogging them.

This continues today, but instead of harems we have serial monogamy. Some wealthy, fairly attractive dude gets married in his 20s to a 20 year old. Stays with her a decade, then divorces. At 35 he marries again, to a 25 year old. Stays with her a decade, then divorces. At 50, he marries a 38 year old.

There's a fair chance the first two wives will never remarry, especially if there's kids involved. So, this Alpha guy has had 3 wives, 2 more than his share, which means two Betas just got demoted to Zetas.
