Also, talking to random girls you see in the streets or malls may end up anywhere from getting a slap to landing up in a police station.
Can you give an example of an approach you might do in the streets or malls that would get you slapped?

I went a little far with the police station bit, but nonetheless it is possible in extreme cases. I was once in a crowded bus station where I saw a beautiful girl. I went up to her and said hi. She just stared at me as if I committed a heinous crime. I got really embarrassed, so I told her something like, "Nothing, just wanted to say hi. You're really beautiful." The girl got really scared. I was just a teenager then, and that was fucking stupid, but anyway, a few people around noticed that there was something wrong, and they started asking themselves if I was troubling the girl. I just quickly ran away from there. I don't know what might have happened, but you pretty much get the idea.

That is a bad experience, but you did it a bit awkwardly due to your inexperience. That type of approach is called a direct approach. Where you are upfront about your reason for talking to her. A lot of people advocate for that type of approach because it shows you are not scared and "big balls" are attractive to some women. And, while I think it can be effective in many situations there are a few problems with it:
it takes extreme bravery to pull off
it's not successful that often unless you are an attractive guy
it's usually over fairly quickly and she might not be open to a strong approach during the day (it can be overwhelming for the girl) - this can be a positive as you can go through more girls faster and get to the ones that like you faster.
I like a more indirect approach and it sounds more appropriate for your culture and you as a person. There are different approaches that you can take that are indirect. There are opinion openers, observation openers or even more indirect things like asking for directions. After you open the conversation what you can do is to ramble for a bit about whatever it is that you are asking for help with and drop interesting tidbits about your life into the ramble that bait her to ask personal questions. Once she starts asking you personal questions then you can ask 2-3 more questions and then say that you need to go and say that you've enjoyed the conversation and that you would like to continue the conversation again soon. Then you ask her "how could we do that?" and she says "I could give you my number"... then follow the advice for going from number to first date given by cheddarchexmix:

Language classes (french/german/japanese) are pretty much your only hope. Check for local Alliance Française's. They usually attract the more open minded girls. And that's still social circle game, not cold approach. Most of India is nowhere near culturally mature to handle a pick up lifestyle. Approaching/talking to an unknown girl is basically unheard of and would be treated as sexual harassment.
Best bet is to move out of India. Europe, Aus/NZ, the Americas are all good. Plan for it starting now. Lots of people have been able to achieve this, even some serious chodes. Why not you? (and no, age is not an excuse).
Or if you want to do it the hard way, start a company like RSD, make an indian tv series like "sex in the city", and basically popularise the heck out of pick up. About a billion people would thank you for getting them into the 20th century.

You need to live your own life man. That's core inner game. You can't live for your parents. You'll start hating them for it and they'll start hating you later on. Break free now. They'll turn around and actually be happy for you after awhile.

Find guys who have a lot of women and find out where they are meeting them!
Approach attractive women and instead of hitting on them, ask where they go to meet men or where they get approached most often.

In India, attractive women are not hit on. They get marriage proposals. And usually the families take care of selecting the partners in marriage (although this has improved to the point where the internet is used initially and the girls have more say in the matter)
