It just happened to me again that I didn't recognize someone I've met before (on a party), a man and a cute girl. Unfortunately this is not the first time this happened to me. Like when I introduced myself to someone at the university, whom I've met once more than a year ago, and I did it as if we hadn't met before (which was kinda embarassing of course. He just stated his name and that was all).

It seems like my memory turned into a sieve some time ago and I don't know how to deal with it. I tried writing down names and basic infos, but since it's even difficult to associate these names with the faces it turned out to be not very helpful at all. So as long as I don't have frequent contact with these people (or hear their names frequently) it seems almost impossible for me to remember them/their names. Of course this becomes even worse when I meet a lot of people, e.g. at a party, or if they have names to which I'm not used at all, i.e. Chinese and Japanese names for instance.

Does anybody else have experience with such an issue? How to I deal with this? Or how can I "minimize" the bad impression caused by this? (rather than apologizing) Or is this issue not as bad as I make it seem?

tldr: I occasionally forget people and especially their names. How to deal with this?

Edit: Thank you all for the good advice!
