I (male) was on vacation and listening to some live street music in the clubbing neighborhood, and some guy approached me and asked what music was playing. I told him I didn't know, but we started talking about the street performers and music in general. He told me he was locked out of his room until the morning (the same situational opener that he later used on women). I told a story about an ex-girlfriend to make sure he wasn't hitting on me. After talking a bit, he invited me to join him at one of the bars on the block.

The point is that he was new in the area and I was on vacation. Neither of us had friends or social proof, but he approached me in exactly the same way one of us would approach a woman. It worked well--we hung out for a while, then started sarging. It could be that this only works in a friendly city (this was Hong Kong), but I look forward to trying this some time--just approaching a guy with a good opener, establishing that I'm not gay, then inviting him somewhere.
