Long story short, I've loved this one girl for five years now. And she's known it. She's always held me at arm's length, and I've been your textbook orbiter.

We live four hours apart now that we're in college; we have been for three years now. Periodically, she's texted me for attention and I've given it to her.

This past week, she's started the cycle again. I've decided enough is enough. I've been ending conversations early and not giving her what she wants. This came to a head three days ago.

She asked me to go see her. I've done it before; platonic little dates that I drive 8 hours round-trip for. This time? I turned her down. I said that considering us friends was silly because she's never invested anything on her end, and it's a hell of a drive for someone I'm not close with. She was initially upset, but recovered her cool and said that she agreed: She had no right to expect me to go see her.

Next day. She texts me at 2:30am saying "Can I tell you something?" When I wake up the following day, I ignore it and tell her to step up to the plate and be with me or to just leave me alone. She should know friendship isn't on the table.

I tell her that I want to make memories with her, like playing basketball and fucking her brains out. I say that I understand if she can't be that girl for me, but that's what's required to be a part of my life.

She responds with "I can't let you go."

I tell her that she doesn't have me in the first place, and that if she's not willing to do what's necessary (break it off) for us both to end up as happy as possible, I will be.

No response two days later, and I'm not planning on texting back.

My question is this: Did I handle this situation correctly? I've debated whether or not I should have entertained her in the first place. I've come to the conclusion that it's best for her to know where I stand and that it's good for her to see me actually resist her. If this will spark something substantial with us, awesome. But at the very least, I think I've gained some respect.
