This happened a few days before the new years, I had went out day gaming for the first time. I had read the game by Neil Struss just a while ago, I just wanted to try out my luck and see for myself if it would work for myself and at large in India given how the things are different than US or other western countries.

I had met up with a fellow gamer who have been in town for a while and we hit the church street, Bangalore on a Sunday afternoon. Initially we had started by going to a bookstore where we split and looked around, I came across three set browsing through the books within the crime thriller sections. I proceeded to initiate the conversation with a 6 among them (the rest were 7, but I was new and wanted to get started, I didn’t use an indirect opener from their side, I just came and opened them up)

Me: hey, can you recommend me some of the books for a good crime thriller I’m sort of new to the genre and am confused with all volume of these names

Her: you can try this you can try this and that.

Me: what is it about?

Her: (explaining the book, which I did not care about)

Me: what are these about?

Her: (explaining the book)

Me: I don’t think there are up for my taste

her: what kind of books do you usually read?

Me: I read old school literature – Kafka, Hemmingway, etc.

Her: those are very old; I’m not familiar with them, I’m not sure what to recommend

Me:  no worries, I’ll look around. Have a good day  

I drifted off and was browsing through, hoping to open a new set and I heard them whispering about something. After a while the 6 called me with the excuse to recommend something and continue the conversation

Her: you can try this, it’s a Shakespeare

Me: doesn’t all his books end in tragedy?

Her: yea, but its good read.

Me: I don’t think Shakespeare is my taste

we continued to make small talk for a minute and she was catching up with her friend and coincidently my buddy was talking with her. We ended our conversation and bid them farewell.

 

The rest of the day I tried opening up different women, but it didn’t land that  great. But the above interaction gave the much needed confidence I needed, and I plan to do more approaches in this year and develop myself  further.

I don’t know what I did right or wrong this interaction, but I’m open to feedback so that I can incorporate that in my next approach.
