Now, i am no pua per say. But in my experience they should be used more sparingly then anything. When a time comes for it its great to use them, but not often. If you make a joke through text that might not translate to well(such as a neg), then an appropriate emoticon is acceptable.

Example: she is late to meet you per say.

Her: Sorry i am running behind

You: Man, you are unreliable :P

Try reading it without the emoticon and see how different it feels.

Another reason to use them is if you are trying to be really flirty about it. Such as saying a compliment or trying to imply something naughty/inappropriate. That would be a wonderful time to bust out a ;) emoticon. Helps really get the point across about your flirtation.

So in summary, use them only when a joke or a neg might be misinterpreted or when you are really trying to be flirty. Other than that, don't touch them.

My rule is one per message tops, and only then to be flirty ;) or to show that it's poking fun :P.

So basically to clarify the intent of a particular sentence.

I feel if you use more it makes you look like a high school kid or a girl.

Emoticons CAN look childish. It's no coincidence children and immature people overuse them. That said, I use them a lot too. I usually adapt to my conversation partner though: if they use it a lot, me too, if not, I tone it down a bit.

The answer to your question, whether you should use emoticons or not, is really not so simple, and should not be taken that way either!

It all breaks down to which social group is the girl you're gaming fall.

I can't stress this enough, really, consider it! If you are gaming a younger girl, you should use more emoticons. Younger people have grown up, using cell phones, and chatrooms, internet slang and emoticons. Texting them without emoticons is not a bright idea. You'll seem like a stuck up guy probably(while you should never use slang, at least not too much of it. You can shorten a few words, but keep your texts readable) On the other hand, texting an older girl, you can come off as childish, and you should only use them when flirting, and even then not too much.

Think about which age group is she, and express yourself accordingly.

I'd say you can use it but not too much. You should only use it if otherwise your sentence could be interpetred differently aka something could sound mean but with a smiley its more a joke. If you do it like this and still think you are using them too much I think it means that you are communicating too much through textual mediums instead of actually meeting up with them.
