The best thing for a secure and confident man to say when complimented is just "thanks". No bullshit quid pro quo return compliment, no snappy comeback. Just "thanks" and then start talking about something else.

I usually make eye contact and smile. That's it, really. No need to say anything. Your face can say it all.

Instead of the generic "thanks" I would maybe say "aren't you sweet" with a smile depending on my mood but I don't see anything wrong with simply thanks either. As long as you don't try to over do it and just sound stupid by the end of it. Take the compliment for what it is and it gives you an opener to introduce yourself and get to know them. They gave you the time of day and now it's only you who can mess it up.

Simple is best. Confidence comes from being comfortable with yourself and your actions.

What is a more simple and comfortable response to a compliment than thank you?

"I like your [insert article of clothing here]"! "Thanks I think so too! That's why I bought it"

If you say it with a playful tone and body language it comes off less sarcastic asshole than it sounds just reading it.

I used to always feel awkward about compliments because I rarely got them so I really was surprised when I would get one and didn't know how to respond, but in the last few years I've started dressing pretty nice thanks to /r/malefashionadvice and I also have awesome hair while almost everyone around me has a buzzcut or just plain short hair, so I tend to get compliments all the time from coworkers or friends.

If you want something fun other than just "thanks," I find that a really easy way to respond to a compliment from a guy or a girl that always makes them laugh is "I know right!". Kind of sarcastically alluding to the fact that you know you look good or you know you're funny.

Just in case you don't understand the context or how you should be saying it, here's an example:

The other day at work I was flirting with a hostess who had to wear big nerdy looking glasses because she forgot her contacts or something like that, so I picked them off her face and asked her if she could see me. She said "All I can make out is that you're a guy and you have nice hair," to which I responded "I know right!"

Don't say it like a cocky douche, say it sort of like a joke and a thank you combined.

to comments about shirts I usually say something along the lines of "thanks its a conversation Peice" or if another item of clothing "thanks, I feel like there should be a pick up line somewhere with it but I don't know what"

they're not much but its better than just thanks
