Science is the right word!

You need to experiment and observe, and each girl is different.

In general you need to escalate by small steps, but if you get positive feedback you can go through these steps as quickly as possible.

So for example, you've been chatting to a girl, and she says something sad or awesome or whatever. The experiment is you go in for a hug. You watch her to see if you get a positive or negative response. Positive = return the hug, squeeze you, stay close, act natural. Negative = pull away, end hug early, act stiff.

If you get a positive response from this experiment, try the next experiment, but kick it up a notch. Maybe go for a long hug, or maybe let your hand go down and touch the top of her bum. Look for her response again.

If you get a negative response you need to dial it back a notch or two. Basically you want a string of positive experiments. If you start hitting negative experiments you're either moving too quickly and skipping steps, she's not into it no matter what you do (no chemistry, she's already taken, she's on her period, whatever).

Every situation is different, so you need to learn how to quickly run these experiments naturally. As you practise this you'll be able to do it without thinking about it.

Note that if you're adult, it's normal for a first date to end with a kiss or more. If you're three dates in and just thinking about eyes and hugs then she's getting bored and assumes you're not interested or don't know how to escalate.
