I guess the point I was trying to make is that I'm not usually one to go on a date with a woman I don't find at least somewhat attractive. It's obvious that you don't know what that dating is going to turn into, but you need to at least be initially attracted to someone before you go out with them, right?

I've gone out with quite a few girls that I wasn't initially attracted to. They grow on you. Definitely, DEFINITELY, go on dates with girls even if you're not attracted to them. You'll be surprised how easy it is to become attracted. The more girls you try it out with, the better your chances of finding one that fits.
Edit: to answer your main question: Yes, date for practice. It won't hurt.
Ok thanks!
Actually speaking of skills, what would I want to focus on specifically practice-wise? I'm guessing being a fun and easy-going conversationalist and being able to keep things moving in the right direction is a good start, right?

I usually focus on the conversation, make it towards her and her interests. And I also try to increase kinos, going from the greeting hug to the hand touching.

It's fine as long as your dates are having a good time with you and you don't lead them on so they can get hurt down the line.

Where do you draw the line? Let's say you end up sleeping with the girl, is that implicitly stating I'm interested in her beyond just having fun?

I'd say, as long as you aren't saying things that imply a long term commitment from the get-go, you're not being dishonest or tricky. Girls like fun and sex just as much as men. Sex isn't something the girl trades for a long term relationship. Girls know that guys like casual sex, and if she's not into having casual sex, she won't have it.

That's a fair point. I think that making the "no long-term commitment" clause clear from the beginning is key here.
Sex is definitely tricky territory, it screws up with people's feelings and even though you made it clear, you still end up with someone's feelings hurt when things don't go long term.

Every relationship I've ended up in was with someone I never expected to.

I think if you don't find her absolutely repulsive you should give it a try. It is helpful to have practice dates, it doesn't have to go anywhere.
Another benefit is you can also show the other person a good time. I've gone out with people who'd like never been on a date before, and I think it was good because I try really hard not to be a jerk and be understanding, so maybe I helped boost someone else's confidence or experience if that makes sense. Not to say I go out with guys out of pity, but you know just making someone happy or showing someone a good time for few hours is really fun too even if you're not gonna marry them.
