So before I though sliding into a girl DM was like an internet myth but I went and tried a bunch of different things and made it work somehow.

Disclaimer you must have a good profile and not suck at texting girls. So for example if you're having trouble talking with girls on tinder in general sliding into a girl's DMs might not work because imo it's the difficulty level above.

Anyways what I found works best is to

  • follow her
  • spam like her photos to stand out in her notifications (bit needy but better than having her not noticing you at all)
  • go radio silent and two or three days later comment on her story

It makes it very chill and casual actually like oh hey I randomly found you on IG and your pics were cute oh now you're story actually made me want to comment on it whatsup

It's very low-key and I think that's why it works best. Then it's just about figuring out if she likes you back and setting up a date

EDIT: just noticed I didn't mention a number in the OP. I usually like 5-10 of her photos to make sure she notices me.
