Sociaizing in general and adding value

Keep it light and crack some jokes in new interactions, people will warm up to you easily this way. Give people your opinions shamelessly and be assertive in steering conversations (preferably away from small talk) to add value. More of this, less of this. Be the king, not the jester.

So I've recently been reading how to win friends and influence people. The book is a bit old but it has some great principles, I'm going to list a few you may find useful or applicable:

Be genuinely interested in the other people.
Smile.
Remember that a person's name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language. (When someone tells you their name, commit it to memory, and actually use it when you see them)
Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.
Talk in terms of the other persons interests. (Ask them what they enjoy doing, delve into it and find out why they are passionate about what they are)
Make the other person feel important-- and do it sincerely. (That means give them your focus, don't think about how you're going to reply. Focus on understanding what they are saying. Make eye contact.)

Not only will using these sort of principles make people appreciate you more, but you'll also draw much more interesting things out of people.

Read more and become more multidisciplinary. With regards to knowing people, it's good to know a little about a lot. The key is to figure out what people around you do and try to get a general grasp of most of it. That way, you can understand what people are doing and engage intelligently (at a basic level).

An academic anecdotal example: I'm currently in college, where lots of people are passionate about their majors. In high school, I took advanced calculus, history and chemistry classes, in college I study psychology and sociology, I've taken a few law classes, I watch Khan Academy videos on astronomy and physics occasionally, I'm taking a literature class, and I write creatively.

Now, can I still do Dot Diagrams or remember the specifics of 1700's Germany? Hell naw. But I know enough about mist things that if I ask someone what he or she is studying, I can engage in a conversation about it.

You're all over the place. You have no problem talking when spoken to, but in a group of your buddies you keep to yourself? Then when you go off to talk to girls which I'm assuming is what you're asking how to do, you feel like you're ignoring your friends?
