Ok, take this example. I'm currently chatting with a girl who works as a librarian. The conversation turned to why I like sci-fi and she proceeds to destroy me for holding an opinion she doesn't agree with. This would be fine if done in a teasing manner, but everything about her tone suggests she is simply trying to pick a fight and intimidate me with her intellect.
I have seen this same behavior pattern before in a family member, and I know from experience that their issue is fundamentally one of lacking experience with or appreciation for emotional intimacy. Not knowing how to engage with another person in a fun way, they seek only to establish themselves as superior in any way they can. In any case, this behavior is not because you or I said the wrong thing or approached the wrong way. The familial relationship structures of their childhoods simply lacked intimacy.
Hope this makes some sense.
