Hey seddit, social butterfly here. Looking for advice/comments/suggestions on something that I have come to call the 'hey what's up?' barrier. Let me explain.

I am a regular at the gym I go to. I see some of these people 4 times a week but still don't say much other than 'hey what's up?'.

Actual conversation I had the other day with cute desk girl at the gym: Me: how was your 4th of July? Her: it was pretty good how was yours? Me: it was good. I got all bit up by mosquitos though lol

Then... that was it. Awkward. But I feel like this type of thing is a problem for me in all my social interactions. The flow just stops and the conversation dies out usually with me wondering why. I think the seduction term for this might be calibration? If yes, why does it take me so long to calibrate in new conversation? Does anyone have any good reading on this topic or advice that they can give? Or at least someone give me a 'hell yeah' that they felt this way at one time or that they feel this way now. I want to stop feeling awkward in my interaction with everyone, not just girls, but the people I work with and my friends and family.
