There are a variety of different ways to start a conversation, but in any online medium where there are profiles, you can look at theirs; find something you have some experience with; and comment on it. I live in Socal, EVERYBODY here hikes. So a common opening when they put hiking or have hiking pictures, will be to skip Hi and start talking about an awesome trail. I also like when girls put something they think is witty, and use that to comment on. One girl put under who should contact her: If you build blanket forts or lego castles. I took that, and the fact that she put her occupation as engineer and combined it into a short playful opener: "We could use blanket ramparts to reinforce the lego castle, but it might be difficult to find enough pieces to build it to scale." You keep it very short; a girl gets hundreds of messages, if she wants to try to get through a portion of them, she's got to be fast through ones that don't entertain.
