There's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all opener. It’s all about the group's energy, as long as you’re calibrated to them, anything goes. If you see they have open body language and they’re loud (acting like they want to attract attention) then a line like "Hey guys, sorry I’m late" is good, can make a funny and playfull vibe. But that's way too much for a quieter group. It’s hard to explain, but you can read the room in a second. It's much better to go with something general and low-pressure: a question, an opinion, simple stuff....
