What are some good first date ideas?

For a first date? Personally I prefer coffee/drinks. Don't go overboard on a first date, keep it small and casual. The reason mini golf is better than say, a movie, is that it's low concentration, gives you something to talk about, make jokes and flirt (small bets on the putts for instance), and most importantly, you CAN talk. Movies and plays and shows, etc... are terrible first dates since you give five, ten minutes before to talk, a couple hours of listening/watching someone and then it's probably time to split up afterward. You want to get to know the other person better. So consider something which facilitates conversation, and perhaps gives something to talk about without dominating the conversation. A few that jump out:

Mini Golf (reasons above)
Museums (though if crowded not as nice)
Coffee (cheap, slow-paced, plenty of time to chat)
Ice Skating
Bowling
Hiking
Driving Range
Trivia Night
Biking
Ice Cream Parlor
Cupcake store (my city has... almost too many, so many of them. Plus board games, it's kind of awesome actually)

But you get the point. Pretty much, a first date should be facilitating conversation, and provide something to talk about ideally. Some things like picnics, taking a class, and such I consider better second dates, movies more third, but whatever floats your guy's boats. This changes of course the more you two know each other beforehand so you don't quite need that "getting to know you" date.

Cook dinner at your place. Movie after.
Dog park (borrow a friend's dog if you don't have one)

I'd never bring a girl to a party as a first, second, third, fourth or any date for that matter. There are so many drunk horndogs at college parties it's stupid.

Last semester some kid nearly came after me with a few of his friends after I told him the girl I was leaving with didn't want his number because she already had mine.

Stick to something simple. Go for a walk or grab a non-alcoholic drink together somewhere (tea, smoothie, coffee, etc.)

Anything (within reason) that you enjoy doing on your own. You bring her into your world and show her things that you have a passion for. Maybe you like hiking, so invite her along. If you can, choose an activity that you are very knowledgeable about. Teach her something. I know this sounds cliche but if you know how to play pool, you could show her how to hit a trick shot or something. Building kino along the way.

Coffee? I usually stick to drinks for first dates, quick and allows you to see if you want more. If there's chemistry then just wing it from there.

dude coffee shop, mall, museum are all good options.

I'm kinda bad at parties too so I always go for a low key coffee or something, even taking my dog to the dog park. Just somewhere you guys can have a conversation. Don't stress about the first date.
