There is no obligation for you to pay. Think of it this way: do you have to pay her for meeting you? Don't you think she should be happy to have the possibility of getting to know you? This is how a valuable man thinks. In the best case she should be the one to pay, but you don't need her to, so you pay yours and she pays hers.

Personally, I go relatively cheap for the first date. I'll take her to a cafe or to one of my favorite "hole in the wall" places with good service and food, and prices I can afford. I pay for it, but I make sure I'm not dropping more than 25 bucks on the meal and just think to myself that I went to a nice place downtown by myself as a reward if the date/girl fizzles out over time.

This usually leads to us trading off paying for each other.

But, it is acceptable to go dutch. Early on in my dating life when I wanted to go dutch but was nervous about it, I would start taking a sip from my drink when the waiter would walk up, and let her decide - and she would look at me and say "separate checks". I don't recommend it, and instead just tell her early on that you prefer going dutch on the first few dates as you two build a rapport with each other.

You're going to have to determine what kind of girl you're date is. Independent women would rather go Dutch, more feminine women that believe in gender roles are going to expect you to pay.

For a first date, start off going to get a coffee and make her pay for her own drink. Then, if you're of age go out for a beer and order her the skunkiest beer, and if she finishes it then pay. By the third venue venue or the second date you should know what kind of girl she is
