What is being yourself?

Plainly put, of course there are stereotypes that fit better in society! Public media builds an "image" for men and women that many people try to aspire to despite some aspects being near-impossible, if not impossible.

Here's the thing. "Being yourself" means knowing yourself, and having the discipline to create and follow your own set of values and/or rules. Both men and women are highly attracted to people who demonstrate passion and interest in what they do. The only way to achieve that sort of lifestyle is by making the decision to think and act for YOURSELF. It's how confidence and self-esteem is built. When you make the changes in yourself/your life that allows you to act and think positively, it returns a hundredfold in the amount of attraction that people in general will have towards you because they want to be part of your life! Look at you, trying to fulfill your goals and dreams and having fun while doing it. Who wouldn't want to be with someone like that?

Never change for the sake of attaining more women. That's entirely goal-oriented and rejection/failure will sting much more! Instead, as others have already said, always change to become a better version of yourself. Think of all the aspects of yourself that you aren't proud of. Why aren't you proud of them? What sort of logical or illogical reason dictates that thought? After you've answered these questions, put a plan in place that involves you actively expending energy to become better in that area. Take baby steps! If you want to be funnier, start by watching a stand-up special one week while paying attention to the comedian's delivery and type of humor. Then try some jokes out on people you know. Over time, the ability will develop and you'll be laughing about how you used to struggle with it. You won't even notice gaining the ability, it simply becomes a part of who you are.

Being yourself also means being able to express yourself freely. At first, it can be so difficult. Believe me, I know! I used to worry so much about what others said and thought of me, which was why I was always so quiet. I eagerly didn't want people to dislike me. But you know what? Expressing yourself freely and having people dislike you is actually a great thing! When you say what is on your mind, you constantly attract more people who agree with you. Over time, this means that you've surrounded yourself with people who genuinely like you for being YOU. There's much less worry regarding issues whether someone actually enjoys being with you, or is just using you. When you are yourself, your personal relationships become so much stronger as well. Being open, vulnerabilities and all, is incredibly powerful. You can say things without feeling judged, and feel comfortable while doing so. Eventually this permeates into a part of your character and identity, and then you further attract more people towards you :)

TLDR;

Never make the decision to change for something or someone. That is entirely external-based and out of your control.
Instead, aim to become a better version of yourself and to improve in personal areas where you are weak. This builds confidence.
Knowing yourself, and creating/following your own virtues and values is key to being yourself since you'll have a better understanding of how you operate and why you operate that way. It gets to the root of the issue, where you can then begin to form more positive behaviours
When you are being yourself, it emits a polarizing response. Yes, more people will dislike you, but at the same time, the people that you will be surrounded by will enjoy your authentic self. This creates strong emotional connections, and it makes the world a better place. Empathy is amazing.

There you have your answer. When you don't know people, you put up a facade of rejection, trying to keep yourself from being hurt. This is is not you. Be you, like when you know that person.

I think "be the best version of yourself" is better advice than just be yourself

It is a bad idea to be yourself. You should be/show your best self and let them fill the rest.

Example: I snore while I sleep. My ex gf hated that. If I approach people I don't know and the first think I say is "hey! i'm Frank and I snore while sleeping" they will think I'm a creep.
