I’m often torn here too. I’ve decided it’s best to not ask for their number while they’re working. It puts them in a really awkward position because a lot of places have rules against that sort of thing, so she’s torn between possibly getting into trouble and turning down a guy she likes.

I’ve decided the best approach is to create a sense of familiarity. My style of approach is a lot of corny humor (like dad-jokes type thing) because that’s just my personality. There was a girl working a register, and we had a decent amount of tension between us. I went to her register probably twice over the course of a week. On the second time, I made a joke about, “We keep running into each other. Do you come here often?” Super corny, but she loved it. After that, I told her that I know we’re clearly into each other, and we should grab drinks at a place better than Harris Teeter, that I know she can’t give her number out at work, so I did exactly what you thought you should have done. I wrote my phone number down on the back of one of those coupons the register spits out. She sent me a text later that night, and we grabbed drinks later that week
