You should complement something that a person has control over. If you are to compliment someone’s appearance, make it based on a specific choice that they made, such as you like how they matched their outfit, or styled their hair.
Even better are compliments that relate to their mind, such as liking an idea that they came up with, their POV on something, the work they completed, or some something else that they created. Normally the more work a person puts into something, the happier that they will be to be complimented about it.
Pick something that you sincerely admire about a person, and explain why it impresses you. Complimenting a person on a value that you both share is a really good way to make a connection.
A common mistake is to use a compliment to try to make someone feel better about what you perceive may be an insecurity of theirs, but then end up just reinforcing that insecurity.
The truth is that a person can take the compliment from one individual completely different than how they would take the same compliment from another person. It all depends on how they view the person giving the compliment and how the compliment is delivered.
A compliment from someone that a person is already interested in is almost always appreciated. In other cases, it can create uncomfortable situations.
The way you can prevent uncomfortable situations is by not being emotionally dependent on receiving a positive reaction back after giving the compliment.
This way the compliment does not seem to being done in a tit for tat type of way, where you are bartering for attention, affection or approval from the other person.
The best trick to avoiding such a situation is not to leave a pause in the conversation and wait for the other person to acknowledge the compliment, and instead immediately continue speaking after giving the compliment.
This way you are giving the compliment but not instantaneously asking for something back in return for it. Many people who give compliments, want the other person to like them / be nice to them / or be friendly with them in return. If you stop and think about it, it really is a disproportionate investment to expect back from a person in return for simply saying something such as that you like their shoes.
