The language barrier is perfect for a guy with bad conversation skills. You can just laugh with them, have good eye contact and body language, slowly initiate kino and they'll get the message. What you say isn't anywhere near as important as how you say it.

I never was good at direct (indirect with escalation has always been my speciality), and to be honest I'm not even sure how to be direct without knowing the language.

There's your answer. Indirect game requires language; direct game is universal. Work on it. You have nothing to lose.

Which country/countries are you in?

This is an opportunity for you. You get to work on the nonverbal fundamentals:

kino
facial expression
body language
dancing
physical teasing
escalation

Just aim to stay in set long as possible without saying more than a few words. If you can say words like 'dance', 'drink', 'yes' and 'no', you've got a chance.

Just imagine how much stronger your game will be once you don't rely on verbal game as a crutch. Attractive behavior is universal, although social norms also need to be observed.
