It's horrific and I feel terribly sorry for boys growing up in Jewish homes. They'll be eight days old when their genitals are mutilated and sucked in the name of a religion they cannot know. The event is not as much for the boy's faith as it is is for the parents'. A forced sacrifice.

So what if circumcision is "in their heritage"? That's an appeal to tradition -- a logical fallacy. Should foot binding and female circumcision be allowed because they were once tradition? What other abominations will we excuse if our quest is to not offend religion?

Why is it acceptable to mar a boy's body for the parents' religion but not their political affiliation? Do people fail to understand that the boy is an individual? A person with his own thoughts, opinions, and voice?

How can the parents be so sure that their son will identify as a follower of Judaism? They certainly must be if they are willing to perform irreversible surgery to label him as one. We cannot, and should not, attempt to label our children's religious beliefs. It is as preposterous as labeling their favourite colour, sexual orientation, or life goals. Only the child can tell us these things through time.

Ok Mr. Moderate ReasonablePerson.

BTW, people don't change because others politely ask them to. They change in the face of strong emotions -- anger or shame for example. You are determined to feel and incite neither. Which makes you a stalwart for the status quo.

I say again: we have laws for a reason. The legal system may be an imperfect mechanism for this sort of thing, but giving doctors in particular unequivocal guidance on circumcision would be a good thing.

All I'm asking for is equal protection for boys, for example under Section 268 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

Someone obviously felt strongly enough to put wording in there explicitly protecting girls. What does that say about Canada and the people who wrote that? And what does it say about you that you're willing to tolerate this sort of sexism?
