“They said, ‘Oh, a man can cook?’ We said, ‘Sure, men can cook,’ but we have to model for them.”

Pretty sure more men can cook these days than women. And top chef's are all men, such sexism in the culinary world. We need to fight this, by getting more women into the kitchen! (yes I went there, yes I'm joking, yes I find it funny, get over it)

Omar’s students wrote essays about violence against women, tackling such questions as: What is your role as a male? Why should we care? What are you doing to contribute?

Sigh. So basically its just "teach men not to rape", "teach men not to abuse women" campaign, taught to kids.

This seems like a step in the right direction. There are all boys schools in the area but they are all private schools which cost a fortune (more than university in many cases).

Taking different learning styles into consideration is something I see helping a lot with grades and attitude about school.

My father went to an all boys school (back when they had public all boys schools) and he described the experience as competitive but not in a bad way. This is something I did not feel when I went to a standard high school. It may be a function of generational difference, but I felt that everything is lax, people who did the best (like me) not looked up to but down on for "trying". My friends did not have anything driving them to do better since there were very few consequences for failing.

While in HS I was third in grade 9, second in grade 10, top in grade 11, and 5th? in grade 12 (when you are already into your desired university program with fairly lax graduation average requirements you tend to slack off a bit, the people with me in the top 5 previous years did the same).

For 3 of the 4 years I was the only male in the top 5 out of about 400 students at a 50-50 ratio. When I see that it makes me think something is wrong with the way people are being taught.

Guys, even though this article is now being discredited, it is true what they say about boy's learning styles - the physicality, interactivity, and different interests. Hope we don't lose sight of that.

By the way, has anyone clicked on the link to the left of the article about girls only leadership school?

Yep. This kind of attitude gives me hope. I work as a library tech in a primary school. Even though I'm not a teacher, I know that boys don't read and relate to books and other media in the "right" way. (They are more likely to be boisterous, competitive and chatty - not quietly reading and giving the teachers no trouble.) My personal, non-official policy is to get boy-friendly, non-fiction books on subjects that appeal to boys (and some girls!), like war stories, weapons, sport, technological stuff, Guinness book of records (great for friendship bonding). I personally paid for two copies of The elements of harmony for my brony boys.

We have a set of laptops where the kids can go on an educational site that is a point-scoring game. There's mainly a group of boys clustered around the laptops - they love the fun and competition. I've had suggestions that it's a "boys club", and can I get them out of there? Nope. If you want to snag a computer, use your initiative and get there early - I'm not going to make it a boy/girl thing.

It's an uphill battle when 90% of teachers are worn-out middle aged females. What tipped me was an exchange I overheard when a boy showed his teacher a book on the Vietnam war that he was planning to borrow. She screwed up her face and said "Whaddya want to borrow that for?" I couldn't believe the ignorance - and this attitude is prevalent. I hope to be able to contribute to changing it, just me quietly there in the background.
