I was an enthusiastic student of gender studies at university. I lapped up feminist, post-structuralist, and Marxist gender theory because it was radical and fascinating, and it suddenly opened up almost limitless possibilities

Which explains how the author implicitely posits that domestic violence is a purely male-on-female occurence.

But we all need to stand together against it, and men — even those hegemonic Aussie males — need to be a critical part of the solution.

The radical idea that men could be allowed a say in society.

If we keep framing men and masculinity as the problem, we will lose the community consensus

Fem-talk for:

"We need men to do the dirty work for us, we are antogonising our slaves, sorry, allies."

Also, "the war of sexes we've been fostering for decades is turning into a war of sexes, and we're very much afraid we'll lose."

Even 'moderate' feminists are now nothing more than sexist supremacists.

D'you know, were it not for the fact that I've dwelt on reddit (mostly this sub) for a few years I would not have the faintest clue what "heteronormativity" or "cisgender" or "hegemonic masculinity" were even referring to. And I'm 56.

I cannot begin to get my head round what the effects of hearing these terms for the first time on a 9yo child will be, let alone how the fcuk they are supposed to process and assimilate their meanings when they haven't even worked out what their respective generative organs are, assuming they can even reliably identify whereabouts they might be.

Perhaps I'm too old, perhaps I'm too dim. But I sometimes wonder if the declining rates of literacy and numeracy in schoolchildren isn't something to do with taking up valuable school hours filling their heads with shit they don't understand, don't comprehend and don't need to know about.
