My wife has been physically and verbally abusive, we have two children and I am worried about the affect on them. I eventually got both of us into a counselling session, I explained that there was abuse in our relationship that I wanted to discuss before I could go further I was told that I had to leave the session as my wife could'nt be expected to be open while under the threat of violence. These were house rules.

I was so shocked I just left. And so things continue, the few people I have mentioned this to look at me expecting the punch line. Just what do you do?

The sad thing is, from the way that he phrases it, I do not know if he got help or not.

This time I told my family and friends what had been happening. That they didn't criticise or judge was a huge help. Soon after, I decided to go part-time as a lawyer and a mediator, and now I run a course to help people deal with anger and conflict.

But you can bet your ass if a man fessed up to friends and family, alienation, calling the cops, and all kinds of shit EXCEPT support would happen.

"Couple violence" has been around forever. The facts are that normally, a man is stronger than a woman and therefore, he's more likely to hurt her when he does take that swing.

And...for many hundreds of years, in many cultures, men had the right to do whatever they wanted to their spouses. So you'll just have to deal with people being surprised and shocked when they first hear about this phenomenon.

Explaining calmly and rationally will make people listen eventually.
