I've never understood circumcision. Why would you just start removing parts of your newborn child? Whose idea was this? Furthermore, what kind of silly animal would evolve a part that needs to be surgically removed at birth?

Currently, my understanding is that it has a religious origin of some kind and the reasoning was that the uncircumcised penis was dirty. Anyone care to clue me in? There's really no changing my mind about whether it's OK to do, but knowing some history might be nice.

Medically speaking...Young men who do not regularly clean themselves properly can suffer from repeated infections of the tip of the penis, balinitis and if the foreskin is involved balanoposthitis. These repeated infections can result in a medical condition called Phimosis. This is where the foreskin is so scarred and atrophied that it will not retract behind the glans, the head, and when aroused can cause extremely painful erections, which can lead to a reduction in blood flow called strangulation, kind of like putting a rubber band on your finger for too long. Lack of blood flow...necrosis...no tip of the penis. My thoughts are that 2000+ years ago when it was first started it was more of a hygienic issue, which is still an issue today because some parents do not teach their boys to properly clean their genitals. There have been recent studies that talk about rates of STIs for circumcised vs uncircumcised if you are interested in more literature.
