While the prevalence of rape is sometimes overstated and sometimes unstated and the conviction rate for rape cases is often reported as "notoriously low" with frequent claims of "getting little to no jail time", I wonder how accurate those claims are.

According to the FBI, forcible rape comprises 6.4% of violent crime

The Department of Justice indicates 4.9% of the prison population is composed of those convicted of rape, and 9.4% of those imprisoned for violent crimes are for rape.

Taking the data here for the rate of each crime shown to have rape to be .8%. Keep in mind this appears to be all rape not just forcible rape, and is not an exhaustive list of other crimes such as drug offenses and fraud.

This would indicate that amongst the prison population, rapists are overrepresented, both overall and among violent crime.
