I've done a few pushups in my day.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Well, I certainly applaud anyone wanting to do a hundred pushups, but take it from this old gym rat, I’ve spent my entire adult life in the gym, and a program like this one can do more harm than good.
If you only train one part of your body (and that’s all a single exercise like pushups is going to do for you), you’re setting yourself up for injuries down the road. I’ve seen it a hundred times.
It’s like putting a powerful engine in a stock Toyota Tercel. What will you accomplish? You’ll blow out the drive train, the clutch, the transmission, etc., because those factory parts aren’t designed to handle the power of an engine much more powerful than the factory installed engine.
Push-ups basically only train the chest muscles and to some extent, the triceps. What you really want to do is train your entire body, all the major muscle groups (chest, back, abdomen, legs, shoulders and arms) at the same time, over the course of a workout. And don’t forget your cardiovascular work!
I’m proud of you guys wanting to do this. Three cheers! Falling in love with exercise, eating right, etc., is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself. And you WILL fall in love with it if you can just force yourself to stick with it a year or two and experience the amazing progress you’ll make.
But do it right, okay?
My advice, find a good gym, with qualified trainers who will design your programs for you (especially in the beginning, until you get the hang of it yourself) and guide you in your quest for physical fitness. Thirty to 45 minutes a day, three days a week, is all you’ll ever need to do (I refuse to believe anyone is so busy that he or she cannot make time for that, especially considering how important it is).
And don’t worry about being embarrassed or not being in shape the first time you walk into the gym. You have to start somewhere and almost every one of us were there ourselves at one time. So no one will say anything to you and very, very quickly you will progress way beyond that stage anyway.
Now get out there and do it! :-)

One of my all-time favourite forms of cuddling/napping is when I'm sleepy, I pull my girlfriend from whatever she's doing, make her lay down, and use her chest like a pillow.
She has small breasts, but they're round and soft.
She then proceeds to play with my hair and try her hardest not to disturb me.
I make a pretty good case for Freud.
Now, that's enough stories for you, missy. Time for bed.

Attention whoring is behavior that does literally nothing. TRP is advocating all kinds of harmful shit.
There you go, the reason that's been given seven hundred thousand times for that.

Attention whoring is behavior that does literally nothing.
Exactly. See, communities that are built on offering content hate it when women join because usually there's a large subset of women who offer little to no content. This is because a lot of women have grown up not needing to. i.e. they're attractive. They're used to being treated nicely for no reason. When this subset of women enter these spaces, they gain their feminine advantage. On the internet, the only way to gain this is to state/show that they're women. So they attach this point for little to no reason to their points just because they know men will pay greater attention to it(women have inherent power to obtain value because they're the gatekeepers of sex; i.e. men want to sleep with them).
Its a story often repeated. Male spaces create something new. Women want to join in(post counter-examples, I guarantee you there are 100 examples to every few counters. like female inventors). The results are something that usually dilute the intended purpose, but since most men like women's company, they don't care.
On the internet though, men have no chance of sleeping with you, but the find the problem of attention whores really problematic because lots of hungry betas derail discussion in favour of the woman. There have been experiments proving this. The same point from a woman will get more attention. A lesser point from a woman will also get more attention. Just for having a vagina.
Now why do people care about attention? Because its not a limitless resource. The women who attention whore ironically have the attention spans of teaspoons, because they can't contribute any other way. People don't want their games/discussions being co-opted by attention whores, so they call them out.
With the feminist movement, its harder and harder to find legit attention-whores called out, which is a shame. Most people just want a legitimate uni-gendered internet.
Ironically one of the vilest(could also be accurately termed most creative and unique) yet most influential sites of internet culture enforces this. 4chan and its kind has spouted more memes and more recognizable memes, lingo and internet fads than any other single site. So much so, people have written books studying the influence and culture of 4chan. It is an extreme case of the opposite spectrum(completely ostracizes any form of attention whoring).
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link
because usually there's a large subset of women who offer little to no content.
As opposed to the men, who never do that. There's certainly a dearth of people with penises who off no content. No, it's only when the women join that there's a surplus of people not contributing content.
So they attach this point for little to no reason to their points just because they know men will pay greater attention to it
Oh good, I was worried we weren't going to work prejudice and mind reading into a single sentence.
Its a story often repeated.
That doesn't mean it's true. Lots of stories are often repeated without question. It also ignores that there were plenty of men not contributing before then anyway.
but the find the problem of attention whores really problematic because lots of hungry betas derail discussion in favour of the woman.
So we're blaming women for the actions of men? How very TRP.
With the feminist movement, its harder and harder to find legit attention-whores called out, which is a shame.
Damnit, you mean people are getting angry that you're trying to paint women with an absurdly broad brush? What a travesty. I feel sooooo sorry for you.
Ironically one of the vilest(could also be accurately termed most creative and unique) yet most influential sites of internet culture enforces this
Ironically, a massively sexist site enforces massively sexist behavior. How astonishing.

There's certainly a dearth of people with penises who off no content. No, it's only when the women join that there's a surplus of people not contributing content.
Men who offer little/no content have no way of getting inordinate attention. Women do.
Also, women aren't very interesting. They are undeniably more likely to be conforming and identify with group-think and offer perspectives they've learnt to build rapport with the group than offer new stuff. They assimilate into male spaces. They contribute to feel included. They don't create the content.
Even RP is an example. It creates value, and has a highly varied and vast collection of theories and ideas on its chosen subject. So much so, the side-bar is the tip of the iceberg and it makes fervent readers out of supporter and detractor alike. There's great stuff and there's evil stuff. And everywhere in between. And it references enough respected non-RP authors in various fields that you acquire a good understanding of genders on your own without necessarily agreeing with RP. All the people who create theory and content are marked, and attention whores are reviled and monitored carefully(such as anger phase RPers).
TBP/SRS in comparison creates no value. Its job is to well, bitch and complain and create meaningless low-effort content to feel creative. And fit in, with other attention whores. Attention whoring is celebrated. They exemplify women's presence in male spaces.
Even you do it. According to the dominating theory in genderlect linguistics at the moment, by Lakoff and Tannen, women's speech is defined by the way it tries to build rapport.
See, when you argue, you rarely create content(illustration of your reasoning/thought processes that convey your point to your reader). Instead you rely on the old points you've already heard. You allude to them. Via sarcasm and snark. You don't necessarily say them. According to Tannen, this speech isn't necessarily trying to convey points as much as its intended for the group that is on your side to identify and agree with you, not necessarily for me to understand since I likely don't think like you and won't mentally translate the sarcasm into valid points. You probably know this.
Its funny to watch.
This is further supported by the presence of the voting system on reddit. Women upvote and hang around women they build rapport with, who's points they can readily understand and agree with. It helps them feel more at ease to see people who think like them. Hence existance of TBP. In fact, if we were in TRP or any place that doesn't agree with you at all, like say, (who knows. maybe /r/republicans?), you would feel ill at ease. Men wouldn't. You can see it here as well, Men from RP and BP respond to opposite grounds with similar speech. I would say half of women automatically launch into hostility and attempts to build rapport, even with the opposite side(this time maybe through empathetic and gentle messages of partial agreement).
I was worried we weren't going to work prejudice and mind reading into a single sentence.
Neither prejudice nor mind-reading. Attention-whoring is obvious. If your gender isn't relevant to your point, it is apparent.
So we're blaming women for the actions of men?
Attention-whores capitalize on the actions of men. Whenever there's a clear display of both going on, both are vilified. White-knighting is one of the more obvious words for this. Neckbeards and "M'lady" and beta and desperate. etc.
I'm holding it up as a relevant example of less attention whoring, not defending it. No discussion of internet culture as we know it is complete without mention of 4chan. It has pretty invented not just specific memes, but genres of them. It has defined broad internet movements and crazily diverse ideas, mainstream and decidedly not, to the point its a entirely new perspective on everything. And the internet at one point danced to its tune. You might have seen a statistic somewhere that 90% of people don't contribute. 10% comment. 1% create content. 4chan is a disproportionately significant part of that last percent in a lot of the genres/categories it specializes itself in. The site itself is comparatively small.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
Well, this hilariously demonstrates what I consider to be one of the biggest flaws in trp's critical thinking. You've taken a study that shows a difference in how men and women speak, found similarities in my speech, assume I must be a woman, and start building off of this unfounded premise.
Surprise, motherfucker
Two groups that are at least half men who made their own separate space to mock others are examples of the exact opposite? Is this the fabled rational thinking of trp?
What is your definition of value, by the way? I couldn't help but wonder if 'The KKK creates value, but the anti-KKK people who argue against it don't' fits right in next to your example. There are many people in TBP who dissect things from TRP and give their reasoning for disagreeing.
Women upvote and hang around women they build rapport with, who's points they can readily understand and agree with.
Which no man ever does. Turns out most of Reddit is filed with women. Never would have thought I'd learn that about the likes of the gaming subreddits, but hey, they're across just like women do (or you're just really sexist, but how likely is that?)
If your gender isn't relevant to your point, it is apparent.
This must be the fabled logic of trp. The kind that can't conceive of any other alternative like 'they thought it was relevant and you didn't'
But you're right, there's no prejudice in sticking to your stereotype or mind reading assuming another's motivation without foundation.
I'm getting really sick of typing on my phone now. We'll see if I remember to come back to this when I get home tonight.

So you're a man. But I'm still not seeing why you don't speak like a woman.
The fact is, no formula applies to any group entirely. RP actually has an acronym for this. its to mock people who flock to reject any trend that shows 60-90% true, as false because of so or so exceptions(without even realizing the concept of exception that proves the rule). Its called NAWALT. So you're a man who talks like a woman, but are you going to seriously argue that there is no such thing as genderlect and specific sociolects that develop within men and women(and even young children)? That there aren't machines that cant tell when women are typing vs men? etc What about observable variances in social behaviour and emotional reactions between men and women? Don't you ever think about what might be the purposes of those nuances?
I also find it amusing you compare red pill to the KKK. You do realize a disproportionate number of the ECs and people who wrote theories and conducted trials are not white and are minorities(I'm not saying over 50%, but near that. a lot of the people advising strategy to people of races are literally from those races)? If I assume you didn't mean from a racist context and just as a hate-group than I really have to question your perceptions. It strikes me as illogical from that perspective alone. It might be true for you, but it is far far too simplistic to explain all the facets of TBP/feminist hate.
And as for plenty of people who do offer insight on TRP on TBP, take this as far as you believe it; but the pervailing view of RP on BP is complete indifference because they are often shooting their own credibility in the foot. Most people who subscribe to RP, after researching any topic TBP talks about, become distrustful of future commentary by TBP. For a lot of us, the most scathing accusations and angriest diatribes just bounce off, not because we're apathetic, but often times we can agree to hate the strawmans BP creates and we're sometimes not even sure if we're talking about the same thing or if the arguments even apply to us. Take dread game or plate theory as an example. as someone who has done both for years, I could write pages on BP delusions about both, with examples. And I have on certain PPD threads, where after being upvoted I appeal to vocal critics to kindly explain to me how there is abuse. They're shocked because they don't really research it on their own. One of the reasons heartiste's opinions from 2008 are clung to so much more strongly on TBP (even more than TRP) is any of the otehr 10 blog links don't make as good outrage porn about dread. Very few BP users actually have good reasoning for disagreeing which I almost always try to glean from PPD and add back into RP theory(we have a system of cycling and revisions).
A group has the right to set rules for participation. TRP makes its rules for its demographic. The only argument against it is... its sexist. Sexist does not always equal wrong.
Unless proven otherwise, it is pragmatic and useful to judge in groups. Especially hubs like TRP which get millions of uniques per month.

I actually want to answer seriously this one, even if its immodest to say.
While visiting and staying with family in India, I was walking on a decently lit but empty road at night with my face in my phone, and this guy on a motorbike(cheap one) rides up from behind and parks a non-threatening distance in front of me. Enough that I don't stop walking or look up from the phone significantly.
He gets off, takes a kitchen knife out of his pants and points it at me. He tells me he wants all my money, my phone and my watch. I told him no, and kept walking. I didn't look back, he didn't follow me.
A little while later, the motorbike's engine started and he went away. I looked back and I felt an absolute bad-ass.
He just wasn't dressed for the role. He was in neat office pants and an ironed neat shirt with a fucking tie. I think he might've been desperate. The knife was long, and an unmistakably wooden kitchen knife. Later on, I thought it might've been a good idea to talk to him. Maybe give him some money if he was having a hard time. Maybe some advice. He might've went on to hurt someone else. He might've went on to suffer himself. I would like to talk to him again. At the time though, I had just entered 066 in the phone, ready to dial if he followed me. I would've taken him on while I waited for police.

Awesome!
I think he might've been desperate. The knife was long, and an unmistakably wooden kitchen knife. Later on, I thought it might've been a good idea to talk to him.
I think you handled it right. You saying "No" and him walking away was the easiest way of showing him that he's probably not cut out for robbery. It's not as easy as he thought it was.
I actually want to answer seriously this one, even if its immodest to say
And you call yourself an "attention whore."
