there isn't one perfect mechanism of dialogue. Debate has its pros and cons. You know the pros, and the cons are as follow:

IMO, the benefits of the polling feature do not outweigh the cons.

the increased effort discourages lurkers and un-invested people to comment, so your results are structurally manipulated.

Structurally manipulated in a positive way though. We want the lurkers and uninvested to pass and we want to keep the active and engaged participants.

un-condensed information is time-consuming to interpret. You need to read responses one-by-one to get a sense of the crowd.

I don't see how this is a downside. You need to participate in order to participate. Nobody benefits if we are all just screaming our own opinions into the void and not reading or engaging with other users.

encourages hostility and misinterpretation

Hard disagree. There is way more room for hostility and misinterpretation in a poll. A) it encourages the your side vs. my side dynamic and discourages nuanced opinions when users are shoehorned info only one of a few choices. B) with only a limited amount of room to explain themselves OP is unable to explain and without users volunteering to explain themselves, way more chances for misinterpretation.

good for debating =\= good for collecting data. Unrepresentative sample
people do this anyways. Most questionaire posts are structured as follows:

-post

-2-3 comment with many responses and engagement

-5-6 comments with small response

-15+ ignored comments, shout into the void comments.

might as well have been a poll

you can still have nuanced discussion in the comment section. A poll post has every element of a text post and also a poll. The poll simply organizes the data objectively. And polls can absolutely be made nuanced (adding a category for those who disagree with the poll/view results without participation if none of the categories describe you). And text posts can absolutely have no nuance (wOmen aRe wHores upvotes and awards pls). The tool is the tool, it's up to the craftsman to make something out of it.

OP can explain everything. Polls also have text.
