Which would be great and all if the problem areas were the targets.
My father was a detective in west Australia's criminal investigation beaurea for 22 years. He was frequently interacting with police from all departments and he remembers seeing the list of known 'black spots' - any section of road with a certain number of deaths. The threshold would change from time to time. And near it on the same board a list of camera locations and traps set by police. Out of 50 locations just for Perth for both black spots and targets - at best 3 coincided. It was rare that there was such a big overlap.
Don't get me wrong, go to the TRG, forensics, detectives, child abuse unit - any of the departments other than the traffic police and you will find some of the most dedicated human beings you will ever meet.
But the traffic police are just there to keep the Sgt off their backs by meeting unofficial quotas. By that I mean while they aren't given numbers to hit in any official sense. If you don't hand out enough tickets in a day you will get spoken to about it and it won't be a conversation you enjoy. And it will most likely be the officers you are competing with for the next promotion who throw you under the proverbial bus so that their chances of getting out of that division into their chosen field are better.
The traffic police aren't thrilled about what they have to do to get by either. So they half ass it. Doing anything that is out of the ordinary gets you attention you don't want. So most sergeants are stuck with a station full of cops too afraid to do anything that might make promotions harder to get than they already are. The sgts don't like the system either, it all trickles down from you know where. But none of it is centered around public safety when kids are dying on certain roads but the police are sent to freeway off ramps.

I mean they did test it sooner, based on the wording. Back then forensic DNA tests were of significantly lower quality and costed a lot more money. My guess is they got a false positive, didn’t want to waste a huge chunk of money on verifying an already expensive test, and locked the guy up. And I’d imagine that once you’re convicted and behind bars it’s probably significantly more difficult to get someone to take an interest in your case and go over the evidence again. Add to that the fact that forensic DNA testing was still a relatively new technology back then and most lawyers, officers, and jury members probably didn’t have a good understanding of how the tech worked and its failure rate.
The cost of DNA tests are finally getting cheap enough nowadays though that it’s considerably more profitable for the state/country to just retest the blood and potentially release a wrongly convicted person than to keep them behind bars.

I laid down in bed, and then she turned and said, "that wasn't cool!" apparently she thought she heard me calling out someone else's name in my sleep, but I was literally still in the process of laying down, my head had not yet reached the pillow.
Then she proceeded to spend the rest of the night taking all the blankets and kicking me really hard. I wasn't even near her on the bed, I was on the very edge of the bed facing away from her, and she was still reaching to kick me in the spine. I ended up just going to the couch. And then she continued being mad at me and convincing me I was wrong about it for the next week until I actually started to think, "hmm, maybe I was so tired that I instantly passed out before I laid down, and it was actually hours after I fell asleep that she said that." But that's literally impossible, I'm in college I've had 4.5 hours of sleep in the past 54 hours and I've been studying or doing homework for most of that time... I'm laying in bed right now... I definitely wouldn't fall asleep that easily.
Breaking up with her might have been the most positive thing I've ever done for my life, and I couldn't have done it without her ghosting me for three days to "show you how it feels to be ignored." explanation: I have adhd and I very often silence my phone while doing homework so that I don't get distracted as often, and I explained that every time and even sent her pictures of my homework after I finished it, but according to her I was actually cheating on her the entire time, and my body language and the way I talked apparently "makes it seem like you can't be trusted. I can't trust you." And those three days she ghosted me for gave me enough time to realize how damaged I had become, then I drank an entire bottle of wine, and then she suddenly sends a text at 2am saying, "did you miss me." And holy fuck. That text finally made everything click. Maybe it was because I was drunk so my ridged brain wasn't in the way, but oh my God, I think she was an actual sociopath. And meeting people still terrifies me.
I almost never dreamt about girls before, but I still have actual nightmares about her.

Damn, I hadn't even thought of that. I sort of doubt it though, she was terrible, but not in that way.
I've looked over everything during that 1.5 years so much, she had this pattern where she'd learn something I enjoyed, or my moral guidelines, things like that, then a few months later she would use an emotional cycle to gradually make me feel guilty for anything that I did.
Her cycle was this:
1.) talk about something I did or said. I would listen and apologize.
2.) Then she'd get more upset at me and talk about how it related to something tragic that happened in her life before we met. And it's say I'm even more sorry, adhd I had no idea, and I'd stop doing that thing immediately if it'd make her feel better
3.) it's tough to describe this one. She'd sort of loop it back around to where she made it seem like it was her fault, but also made it seem like it wasn't her fault but she'd just take the blame for it. And this would make my emotions rapidly switch from feeling upset with myself about my actions, to feeling empathetic and sad that I couldn't carry the blame for her.
4.) she'd say something like, "it's okay, things are always my fault anyway. Why should this be any different." but she'd say it in a tone that made it sound like I was never sorry in the first place. And that made me feel even worse, but in a different way from the other ways of feeling bad.
She had this cycle down perfectly, and she would do it everytime I did or expressed interest in anything.

So, it's actually down to the fact that brains are very easy to control.
Think about it like this, love is caused by a series of chemicals in your brain. And your brain actually forms an addiction to those chemicals, which is why it hurts so badly when you've lost love. It's more like a being dependent on a drug, and this drug can cause you to completely miss a lot of things that are happening.
Not all love is similar to doing drugs, because not all love causes harm. But when the love does cause harm, then similar to some drug addicts, your brain keeps telling you things like; "Everything is fine and under control. This drug isn't bad, I'm just doing something wrong and it's messing up. I have power, I can quit at any time." It's more like this, that's why people say that you can be blinded by love. It seriously can blind you.

A simple search would show that it's very real. There are a ton of stories out there about the incident.
It appears that he was released in 2016 and awarded 2 million dollars. The sad part is that the woman doesn't want him released and doesn't believe that he should be awarded the money.
