I’m over educated but middling in my career

I'd bet you're thinking more than doing at work too.

Find myself struggling to get motivated but don’t want to need motivated to work hard at work

But then you ask for external motivation from people here?

Sounds like what you need is discipline. Be honest with yourself, I doubt it's just at work. I might suggest picking back up OYS. Doing work and making progress should translate everywhere.

Instead of just asking others for free advice, have you taken an honest look at yourself and your performance?

What are they doing that you aren't? Are they working harder, have they done more to sharpen their skills than you have, or do they general just suck at their job less than you?

Find myself struggling to get motivated

Why? Are you in the wrong field? Or is your company/role just a bad fit for you? Or simply just a personal problem you need to fix on your end (i.e., you suck)? Maybe you're too much nice guy/beta at work?

Have you built a career network of colleagues and/or mentors that you can reach out to for specific advice in your career? Expand your network, become a known person in your industry so that you have options. At mid-30 you should be getting to a point soon where you can easily find another job in your network or have people starting to recruit you unsolicited.

Don't play into calling yourself "over-educated". Every experience and educational attainment has a value somewhere along the line. But you can't replace experience, so if you're lacking that, you need to put in some good years of hard, quality work to build a good reputation and resume and then you don't have to even worry about the education part b/c you have a demonstrated track record. mid-30s, you still got plenty of time. Anyway, more doing, less thinking.

Most men don't start finding stride in their careers until the reach the mid to late 30s. This has been my experience anyway. It looks like you are earlier on the MRP journey. Keep the foot on the gas in all areas of your life and see where you are at 12 months from now.
