I was going to be a professional jazz musician. So happy I was wiser with my decision. I've never met one non starving artist in my entire life.

I think the film industry is extremely blue pill, and from what I understand, has terrible working conditions. I have a cousin who's a TV editor in Hollywood and he is falling apart from stress and long hours. I don't think moving to CA would be positive - as its very expensive, crowded and hard to enjoy without being highly established at career game.

Since you're asking, I would switch careers to something more practical and less "rock star" like film, music, etc.

I do no recommend getting a master's degree "sight unseen" -- e.g. without working in an industry (at an entry level) for a year or two first. It is a huge investment and it very often goes bad. I am paying off loans for 10 years for an education in a field I only worked in for 6 years before deciding I couldn't stand it.

Hey man, first off, what have you been doing since school ended? Do you have transferable job skills that could land you a job in Cali before you move there? Also, what networking potential do you have out there? Any old college buddies? Family friends?

My friend lived in LA for a while and was friends with a couple guys in the film industry. One guy seemed miserable, the other guy was really fun and outgoing and was doing interesting shit like being an assistant to a major film star. I had moved to Cali for the hell of it and it was tough - rent was high and taxes were murder, traffic sucked, but at the same time I'm glad I did. The weather and experiences I had there were amazing. I think you should take the opportunity, especially if you have the support of your parents. Think about it, it can only go up from this moment forward. Even if you fail you would end up back where you are now, which isn't bad at all. Just be prepared to hustle out there, and don't worry about the hipster fags, they're too self medicated to do much of anything besides collect unemployment.

I highly recommend against moving to CA. Your cons are spot on. Your pros are all marketing BS. CA is not the "Land-of-Sun-Fun-and-Sluts" that the media sells. It is way expensive, traffic sucks, work is tenuous (lots of competition), and the chicks are uptight and bitchy.
CA will not be a solution. It will only be another problem.

1: Move to a state that's affordable to live in. Google it. States like California are politically diverse on a geographic scale. Get out of the cities, especially LA and San Francisco, and you hit conservative territory. It's the same story with Oregon. Drive an hour out of Portland or just across the freeway in Eugene and you start seeing the Battle Flag of Northern Virginia.

Will probably have to pay to go back to school (how serious are employers about degrees nowadays? Haven't done a job interview in years)

2: Go to a trade school. You can be work-ready in 6 months, there's always room to grow, and the only broad expectations typically revolve around not being a felon. Pay's reasonable for the investment into the trades, and there's always need for more refrigeration system technicians and oven maintenance personnel.

Believe it or not, education helped get you into this mess, and you probably had more than one teacher from high school through college that sold you on the bullshit about how money follows when you chase dreams. More traditional education isn't going to help you. If you can teach yourself how to do something like program, all the more power to you, but in broad terms the only schooling you should get should be tailored towards a trade.

3: Stay the fuck out of California.

I quit reading after you said your family would support you regardless. Easy fucking answer, follow your dream. Move your ass to California, and be MANIACAL at pursuing your dream job in the film industry. I grew up poor as fuck, parents were dead broke (I still help pay some of their basic needs. Food and utilities. Same for my younger sibling). I'm not making about 75,000 a year, in school to get my undergrad to create more career mobility. It was a fucking struggle. Saying that, if I had your opportunity... I'd be chasing my dream hard core, knowing my family = safety net.
