Making a trip to Barcelona, any advice?

Spent the summer in Barcelona doing a course in Spanish. What Ive learned during this month:

Tourists are way easier to make contact with than locals. Somehow locals are only interested in locals, so you'll be mainly fishing out of the tourist pool. However, this can work to your advantage; other tourists are just like you out there for fun, so inherently easier approachable, while locals may be more minding their own business.
Join a pub crawl! The people at the hotel usually know some. Other option is to walk up and down the Rambla and collect leaflets that promoters give you. See which one seems the mot interesting and join that one. They usually have pretty good deals; I joined one where for 15 euros you would get two drinks at the bar they worked for, bus transport to the beach clubs and no need to wait in line. Just beware of pickpockets, cuz those are abundant in Barcelona.
Overall, just have fun and enjoy your stay! Barcelona has so much to offer, you won't be bored for a second. Also, especially in clubs; if you emit a vibe of having fun, people will automatically be drawn to you :)

Other useful tips:

Metro tickets are fairly cheap - with T10 tickets you get 10 rides for about 10 euros. Can go anywhere within Barcelona on one ride, and a ticket is usable with multiple people.
Razzmatazz and the beachside clubs (Catwalk, Shocko etc.) are fun as hell! Another place you want to check out is the bar of Hotel W. Is more expensive, but has a beautiful view over the city and beach.
If you're a sports fan, Camp Nou is definitely recommendable. Great tour, and you'll see basically everything of the stadium. Also the Olympic Stadium on top of Montjuic is interesting.
On Placa d'Espanya you have a sort of colosseum building which they renovated into a shopping mall. While the mall is not really interesting, on top of it there are some bars and restaurants which are pretty cool. You'll also have a great view over the Placa d'Espanya and the Font Magica, with the lightshow at night.

Spanish don't view Americans as "exotic" more so quite the opposite. If you can speak fluent Spanish, then you have a fighting chance.

Check out "L'Ovella Negra". It's an awesome bar below ground in El Raval on C/ de les Sitges, 5. You'll find plenty of locals there and plenty of women on the weekend.

Avoid bars and restaurants on Las Ramblas. They are very pricey. The only people that ever go to them are tourists because locals know these places are specifically designed for tourist's money.

On Carrer de Ferran there is Temple Irish Pub which is awesome on soccer nights. There are also plenty of more bars on this street so I would recommend checking it out. Also on this street is a tapas bar with a huge canoe hanging from the ceiling or on the wall (I forgot which) - awesome place. The seating is set up in a way that pretty much forces you to be social with strangers... making opening a set easy. You'll see what I mean if you go :)

Contrary to what /u/119169 said, I don't think Spaniards are difficult to open at all. They're very friendly and open. Just keep in mind that locals are very aware of the pickpocket situation in Barcelona - so when you open someone keep this in mind so you don't do anything to scare them off or be wary of you. Which reminds me, be wary of pickpockets. If you don't need your wallet, don't bring it with you. If your sister wears a purse make sure she does NOT hang it behind her on her chair.

Some Spanish men are very aggresive with women (it even creeps ME out) so many women try to seem cold as a defensive mechanism. Don't let this deter you from approaching.

Regarding language, don't expect many Spaniards to speak English.

Go to tapas bars as much as possible. They're everywhere. Opening a set is easy at many tapas bars.

El Borne = in my opinion, best neighborhood for nightlife. There is a bar there that specializes in infusions. One of their cocktails is prepared inside a coconut and the bartenders are very friendly to foreigners :) I wish I could remember the name of it.

You probably won't be seen as exotic but some girls will still find you interesting because you are American.

One more important thing, nightlife begins late in Spain. At around 11pm-12am the bars are filling up and people do not go to the clubs until about 3am. So don't go out on American time :)

People from barcelona are not very open, unless maybe you speak catalan. Stick with tourists and expats. There should be plenty.

Worst city I’ve ever been to. Everywhere has a 10 to 1 guy to girl ratio. Ugly girls too. Literally getting rejected by girls that I reject in LA. This city is terrible, food is good. I met a girl in London took her to Paris wish I took her to Barcelona instead cuz I’m so depressed now after 4 days of non stop getting rejected til 6 am in that shit hole of a city
