In the interest of sparking a thoughtful discussion about the current hysteria, I'd like to address a couple of issues suggested by this clip.

Semantics. One does not "survive" coercive sex, one endures it. This is not to say it isn't ubiquitous or damaging, but the terminology is sensationalized, thus trivializing the real trauma of violent sexual assault. (And for the record, I've suffered both.)
Most people who are non-violently raped do not further humiliate themselves by making a public issue of their vulnerability. (Nor are many who are physically traumatized.) The crime reports are skewed in this regard, and I would tend to take the CDC's epidemiologically-compiled statistics (with the above-mentioned semantic proviso) as the more accurate representation of unwanted sexual activity in American society.
The glaring omission here is the CDCs lack of inclusion of any statistics of men who suffer coercive and/or violent sexual contact.
No one is seriously arguing that rape isn't endemic (and even increasingly common) as social and economic frustrations boil over, BUT if you're going to convene a serious panel to discuss the issue -- as PBS Newhour did last night-- it might be less distracting if the three chosen participants hadn't been named "Biddy" Martin, Alison Kiss, and Andrea Peno.

I never believed the rape statistics to begin with. I was on my way out the military when the crackdown on rape in the military started. I saw one guy's marriage ruined by a false rape accusation, and another guy dragged through a year long court martial. Both were found innocent, but their military careers were put on hold, and there was no penalty to the female accusers. If there was penalty to the accusers, that would be gobbled up by the media as the military not only let the rapist go, but they punished the victim. Bullshit.
