What is the impact of the phrase 'man up' on men and women everywhere?

Whenever I hear that phrase, I tend to laugh because I primarily see it as a manipulation tactic.

Depending on the speaker of the phrase, I tend to respond in kind. The goal is to see if the offending party can see the similarities in the statements.

"Man up" is code for "Do as you are told." It's that simple. It is extremely rare to see the phrase used for the benefit of the man it is directed at, e.g "Dude, i've won a million dollars and if you don't accept half of it you are not being a real man!"

"Man up" is a phrase used to coerce a man in to doing something that isn't in his own best interest, holding hostage his social approval.

Its petty and selfish. When someone say it to you they're just trying to shame you and put you down until you do what they want.

I hate it. More often than not it's used to silence discourse or to prevent attention being given to issues or to shame a man who doesn't fit the perfect gender model for being a "man".

If one must use a term when someone is being immature or overly whiny, "grow up" seems to be the most accurate. "Man up" is hardly ever used like that, though.

Using phrases or talking about women in terms of a stereotypical, dumb, and narrow minded view of femininity would never be tolerated by our modern western society for one moment. Yet it seems we can't be the same way with men which saddens and annoys me. It's more serious than that to, the way we treat men in this way could be literally dangerous by teaching them to hide their feelings and not ask for help.

It perpetuates traditional sex role stereotypes that pressure men and women to behave according to their sex. This particular phrase imposes on men the expectation they will be stronger than women and so more capable of earning money, therefore they ought to provide for and protect their womenfolk. It's all part of am outdated package.

I agree with you. I find this stereotype sexist.

As a child I seriously wondered what justification there was for these phrases to be in continued usage. I really took that whole equality myth to heart.

The term "man up" coming from a feminist mouth does nothing but make me laugh now. I can't help but see the irony it is and chuckle. I usually hear it when I disagree, go figure.

I'm a feminist and I agree. Masculinity and femininity are socially constructed and fluid. You decide what it means to be a man if you want to be "a man" at all.

This really seems like a pretty small thing to be upset about guys. Words only hurt you if you let them, and we should all be able to control out emotional states. Complaining about little insignificant issues like this takes effort, focus and credibility away from more important issues, like unfair advantages to mother's in divorce proceedings just for one example.
