Cancer research UK hold event just for males. Man on the Run is a 5k running and walking event for men and boys that has been devised to raise awareness of male cancers.

Any chance male breast cancer will get a word in?

As part of my nursing training, we had to look at a 'social issue that affects a minority" and I did it on male breast cancer. In Australia (and I'm sure elsewhere) breast cancer awareness is a big deal. They have ladies days at the cricket, pink logos, siluhette females, female spokes people. The breast cancer pamplet also talks about ovarian cancer.

Interesting thing, male breast cancer, per capita, has the highest suicide rate amongst all cancers. The reason being is that the males that get diagnosed with it have a statistically significant depression increase due to getting a "woman's disease".

Over the last decade and a bit, I've written to the Australian Cricket Board, National Breast Cancer Council, Cancer Council Australia, McGrath Foundation. All met with silence. I wrote to the NBCC a few times, and I finally got a response when I actually sent them a copy of my assignment.

They stated that they have limited funding and thus they had to focus on the majoirty of patients.

So, the 1% of breast cancers that are male don't so much as get a fucking sentence in a pamphlet or on TV.

And they say men don't have gender equality issues.

Ill share this a few places.theres loads of guys at work that love running so in sure they would be interested even though kent is a bit of a trek from somerset (200 miles)

Are we ok with "separate by equal" on this sort of fundraising? Women run for "women's" cancers (despite us also getting breast cancer) and men run for "men's" cancers? Shouldn't we all run for both?

This is...a strange approach to be honest.

I guess this is a reaction to Race for Life, a women-only race for cancer research funding.

But the problem is that only women could run, which is bad.

Now we have a race that only men can run, which is...bad.

So now we have two bad things, instead of one.

Great.

EDIT: On the subject of Race for Life - boys can run with a female participant, if the boy is under 10. So it's not technically a women only event; it's a "we're afraid of adult men" event. It's sick.

Hey, men, you can get involved, but only via a female proxy! You don't count otherwise!

"Sign up your man now" - Oh, we're property, right. How about I sign up my woman for something? Oh wait no, that would be sexist.

And there's some gaudy print-out signs for men to hold up while the women run the race. "I am a man and I will shout until cancer is finished!" - or, maybe I could run the fucking race instead. What if I don't have a partner? What if I'm gay?

It's like some sort of forced-subservience, as if to make up for all those years of oppression that I took no part in. I bet some of the women involved are rubbing their hands together thinking about how powerful they are not allowing men to be the centre of attention.

How the fucking hell is it even allowed? I don't get it.

We regularly review our events to make them the best they can be and three years ago we seriously looked at whether we should let men enter Race for Life. However, our research showed that Race for Life’s success is due to its appeal to women as a women-only event and to allow men to enter could bring in less income for the charity’s life saving work.

We cannot risk this vital source of income to cancer research. We hope you understand that this decision has been made in the best interests of the cause.

What does this say about the women, who are currently applauded as being so selfless and giving? If men participate they're all going to stop running? So much for charity.

There's two scenarios where this makes sense:

The women participating are so egotistical that to not be in a women only event would take literally all the appeal away.
The women participating are afraid of men being anywhere near them.

So they did some 'research', didn't even try it, and decided it would be harmful. That hurts. I am a man and I am harmful to the fight to beat cancer. I hope their actual cancer research is of a better standard.

Why am I not surprised? Sometimes it takes a woman to do the right thing by men.

This isn't a national event, and I'm guessing women are allowed to run. Not good enough.
