There is literally no way that this teacher is being given preferential treatment because of her sex. California is one of the most enlightened and fairest places on Earth regarding gender issues.

Am I the only one that thinks this is much more of an appropriate punishment for statutory rape like this (16 or 17 year olds who "consent" to the act)?

I don't like the double standard, but this punishment seems to fit the crime.

It is very common for non-violent convicts to be released very early in CA. Sometimes they will serve 25% of their sentence before being released, unless there are other complications while they are in jail.
