My husband and his ex would be the first - it's obviously "closest to home.". What we dealt with wasn't easy, but we've witnessed so much that we're actually grateful that we didn't go through what some of our friends have.

This story starts in the 4th paragraph - I think it is one of the worst I've seen. Sad that I can't just say the worst.
On a side note, I was discriminated against at my former workplace for my involvement in that case, because my boss there was affiliated with the organization supporting the accuser.

I have also described how Child Protective Services and the court dismissed my BIL's value to his kids just because he was their father.

Within my group of friends, I've also seen transfers of custody from Mom to Dad, where Dad still had to pay child support for months after the switch. When it was support no longer merited by an order, but still collected by CSEA (under threat of jail,) they basically told him he couldn't get it back without suing his ex.

Alimony by any other name. What is the reasoning behind it? Basically that women are seen to be incapable of looking after themselves on their own (false reasoning, obviously).

A former colleague of mine's ex literally kidnapped their child and moved abroad without telling him. Despite consequently failing to turn up to any of their court-ordered custody exchanges for over three months, he was ordered to continue paying child maintenance, without the amount being altered for the lower cost-of-living abroad.

My brother lives with the mother of his four year old son.

The mother is an alcoholic and has a history of drug abuse. She's on medication for her alcoholism (antabuse if anyone's interested) but frequently skips her meds and disappears on benders for days at a time, stealing cars, fighting, wrecking houses and often being returned by the police. She also has a history of serious mental illness (in the middle of this year the social workers found a stash of hundreds of notebooks, filled with tiny writing detailing every imagined slight, wrong look and word out of place in excruciating detail).

Because of her continued violent, unpredictable behaviour and addiction, their son has been placed on the "at risk" list, meaning he is in danger of being taken away by the social work department and placed in state care.

My brother proposed a solution, which was that he should be named sole carer since he's clean, sober and has a full time job, and has stuck with his partner through all of this for four years. That way the child would no longer be seen as at risk because my brother would be solely responsible - and after all, my brother looks after both of them since his other half isn't capable.

The social worker's response to the proposal was this: a blank look, a short pause and then, "but you're just the child's father".

That's right, he can't be named sole carer, even he he does everything for the child, because he's not the child's mother. Meanwhile, the mother retains all her rights despite being a violent alcoholic criminal with a history of violent crime and mental illness.
