The video isn't new, but the news story is from this month and came up in my facebook feed today. If this is a repost I apologize, but it's the first time I've seen it, and it really struck me when read in context with other recent posts.

The video describes assumptions and discrimination taking place among prison administrators. The victim pled - literally begged - for help from authorities, and was denied twice.

The warden told the 17 year old victim's mother to tell him to just grow up... that this happens all the time, and it's no big deal.

A social worker recounts her discussion with the prisoner's psychologist: "The psychologist said, 'He's just another fucking inmate,' and I rebutted. I said, 'But he's being raped and they're beating him' and he said, 'he probably likes it.'"

The callousness in some of the comments below the story mirrors the administration's attitude... people willing to condemn a 17 year old boy to repeated, forced anal rape for the heinous crime of momentarily lighting a trashcan on fire. How easy it is to mentally hand out sentences of pain and suffering when one can sit comfortably in feigned innocence and presumed superiority. Over the last few days, in discussion on two cases - one of murderous revenge upon a convicted rapist, and one of murderous revenge upon an alleged rapist - commenters on the original news sites and on reddit spoke up to condemn the murder victims and some even to excuse their killers, because having raped made the victims undeserving of even basic human compassion.
Though I would not want or encourage people to wish such ill upon anyone, including the worst of criminals, it is disgusting how quickly the outrage against the rapist and the compassion for the rape victim disappear when both of them are male and in prison.

No. NO! That is why it is a big deal! Seriously, what the hell!?

Whoever says "men are not affected by systematic physical abuse" really need to get their eyes checked.

Just think, if the amount of rapes that went on in men's prisons went on in women's prisons, there would be a huge crackdown, no jokes made about it and care for the victims. I just find it sticking the comments that somehow you deserve it for being there.

Women do get raped in prisons, by guards and inmates, but the amount that goes on is a lot less than in men's.
