I recall reading something on slashdot once where a comment from someone who was in the military's experience with this. He recounted the experience of an israeli unit that was a "trial run" for gender integration. (may be messing up the details, this was a while ago)

Bottom line, they couldn't control the soldiers. The men in the combat unit became very much attached to the women in their squad, and seeing one of them go down in combat triggered an almost primal-rage in the men that they very much took out on the enemy. It didn't matter what the rules of engagement were, they were going to kill them all. No prisoners.

In the end brass decided mixed-gender combat squads were too risky for this reason, that natural "innate" gender tendancies of males' role in protecting females was too difficult/impossible to control.

To be honest, I don't have a problem with this. Make another corps comprised of only women (so that men don't have to worry about fighting alongside them and getting killed) and let them deal with any situations they're assigned to. They could start with peacekeeping. If they do well, they can be given more dangerous undertakings.

Of course, at no time must any male soldiers' safety be dependent on women. Never. They should not work together on any missions.

Any trust in their combat effectiveness needs to be earned by them.
