"Greedy ex-wife chases ex-husband out of the country". She lives in a $1.2 million lakefront mansion. She has $600K in equity, she get's $2,000/mth in rent $2,500/mth disability payments she was getting $2,235/mth in child support before she greedily went after spousal support on top of that! How much more money did she think she could get out of the poor guy...

I dislike how the title paints the man as a deadbeat and a bad father, I don't blame the poor guy for bailing out.

Thats laughable. She has a home worth 600000$(with the mortgage substracted). She even signed a contract saying he only has to pay child support and nothing to her. She gets out of it because "she was rushed and didnt read it". The fuck? If you sign a contract and you didnt read it then its your fault. You are an adult. Dont fucking sign something without reading it.

Also, anyone else catch the fact that the guy read Mao Zedong? I really started liking him more after I did.

That is bitter news for Donna Mills, who has spent the past eight months urging Canadian authorities and Ontario’s Family Responsibility Office (FRO) to find her ex-husband and force him to comply with the court order.

It's kind of funny to think that he can be forced if you could only back him further up a corner. Why wouldn't he simply anonymously donate his remaining wealth to charity or something and commit suicide rendering himself completely worthless to her if that were to happen? He's said he'll never comply. That's all there is to it.

Some want these men to be treated like escaped circus animals and think it's going to make them own up to perceived responsibilities. They shouldn't be surprised that the occasional circus elephant crashes through the circus tent after having been forced to live on peanuts.

$5000 a month is not a ridiculous amount for 3 children, including one with special needs and one who just had expensive cancer treatment plus continuing followup.

An expensive house isn't too special if it comes with large mortgage and debt.

The guy's giving up sole custody to the wife sounds like something that may make sense for a businessman to do, not a case of him being screwed.

A 51-year old teacher who was out of work caring for kids for 20 years really doesn't have much employment prospect. (Not an excuse for her not to try though, and take whatever she is offered.)

It's not such an outrageous story considering those things.

But then you get to the part about her breaking their agreement because she wanted spousal support. And the part about the mansion including $2k a month income for her. Those are the parts that make her look greedy, lazy and wrong. Unfortunately the system is broken enough that it supports such behavior.

The couple split in 2005. A deal was finally brokered after a two-day trial and on May 1, 2008, both parties signed the Minutes of Settlement. Donna would have sole custody and stay in the house with the children while Hans paid child support. Donna would pay Hans $175,000 to buy him out of the matrimonial home.

In subsequent court pleadings, Donna maintains she was “rushed and pressured and did not read” the documents before she signed them. She said she did not understand she was signing away the right to any future spousal support, even if her circumstances changed.

“Donna got the million dollar lakefront mansion and full custody of the children with child support, but no spousal support, in exchange for the house,” Hans Mills writes. “Everyone at the time agreed that my spousal support obligation had been met fully.”

He notes the deal also provided Donna with a built-in revenue stream because the house contained a separate apartment that was rented for nearly $2,000 a month.

Over the next few years, a feud simmered between the once-happy couple. Three years after their “Final Order,” all kinds of issues had arisen about the kids and Donna’s inability to work, and a new trial was scheduled for the fall of 2011.

Yeah, material assets =/= income. She may have a million dollar house, but she also has a very limited income, 4 kids, who each have their own specific and difficult problems, and massive debt.
