It's not true. Even the studies on NOW's website find that a greater percentage of the wage gap than that is explained by women's choices (although you need to dig around through the studies, they aren't upfront about it).

Also, don't use Wikipedia for anything related to gender issues. Because of Wikipedia verification policies there is a tremendous amount of feminist bias in all the gender related articles.

alright, i'll throw in...i'm interested to see an answer for this. OP, can you provide the direct link the wikipedia does?

can anyone find any specific holes in the research methodology? it doesn't seem to account for salary negotiation skills, but i don't think that alone would account for a nearly 20% difference.

No it's not true, it's just biased (usually feminist) liars.

not only occupation, age, experience, education, and time in the workforce, but also childcare, average hours worked, grades while in college, and other factors. Even after accounting for all that, women still are paid only 81.5% of what men "with similar demographic characteristics, family situations, work hours, and work experience" are paid.

Only 16 percent of surgeons, but a full 50 percent of pediatricians, are women. So the statement that female doctors make only 64.2 percent of what men make is really on the order of a tautology, much like saying that a surgeon working 50 hours a week makes significantly more than a pediatrician working 37.

It really depends on how they defined occupation. Many statistics like that define occupation as a "type", like physician. So you have pediatricians lumped with neurosurgeons, paralegals lumped lawyers and judges, etc.

Also time in the workforce and time at the company. Women switch jobs more often, which often means starting over, and lost opportunities for raises and promotions.

While hours worked is important, which shifts they were worked also matters, as does whether you're on a rotating schedule, weekends, etc.

I'm not really sure how to respond to this other than saying that you could easily perform a similar study that goes the other way. Go to a 5 star restaurant, track the waiters and waitresses, keep track of their hours and tips and you'll soon find women out earning men even when accounting for everything like hours worked, age, experience, etc.

I'm sure there has been a massive amount of research done on this issue and I find it suspicious that this is pointed out above the rest.
