In high school I was made to sit out of a class on domestic violence for saying it was only focused on women.

One sided, yes. Sexist...I'm not so sure. Granted it lacks a lot of information, but it presents a message to a target audience (albeit a target that could be broader).
It would be another story if the poster claimed that ONLY women were assaulted. It just doesn't present all of the facts.

"It would be another story if the poster claimed that ONLY women were assaulted"
Bullshit. The victim's face is female, the hand is almost certainly male, and every fucking stat is about women. You don't have to claim it when you have so strongly implied it.

It is a targeted message]
i'd argue that all such messages are 'targetted'
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 14 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Not only is it sexist, but also factually incorrect.
[–]TerriChris 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
The feminist government define domestic violence broadly to include yelling, psychological, and financial abuse.
http://www.ovw.usdoj.gov/domviolence.htm
My brother was charged with domestic violence battery for yelling at his wife.
To feminists the stat is accurate.
[–]mtux96 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
So if your wife nags you to do things, you can file a domestic violence charge against them for psychological abuse...

Most states have mandatory arrest-the-guy procedures for 911 DV calls.
Good luck with that.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts.
[–]hardwarequestions 4 points5 points6 points 14 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
slightly sexist, very stupid, and extremely exaggerated. those stats suggest 31.5 million women are X every year. i call bullshit.
[–]tigalicious 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Judging by the percentage of people I have personally met, that is actually a pretty accurate estimate. Why don't you find that number believable?
[–]hardwarequestions 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
it's the misleading implications it makes. first it's discussing DV. than it segues into assault, subconsciously suggesting they are one in the same, which isn't true. it doesn't even qualify what definitions they're using to come to the given numbers.
[–]tigalicious 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I believe the goal is to identify assault as at least as serious of a crime when it occurs within a family, since the opposite subconscious opinion is a problem in dealing with this issue. The ad also ties that statistic in by pointing out that the majority of violence towards women actually occurs as domestic violence. It's a poster, not a research paper, dude. It's raising awareness of a social problem, one that apparently you aren't very aware of, if that number is so surprising to you. So I think it's doing a pretty good job.

In America, wife-beaters are considered among the lowest of scum, maybe one rung up e ladder from rapists and child molesters. If anything, there's too much outrage about domestic violence against women, and too little awareness about domestic violence against men. Alarmist shit like this only stokes those flames, and makes the attention disparity worse.
Further, that scary picture reinforces the narrative of male violence and female powerlessness. This constant portrayals of men as dangerous, powerful victimizers, and women as scared victims in need of help and protection, it vilifies men and disempowers women. Imagine a poster spreading awareness of street crime, that showed a black person's hand holding a pistol, shooting at a scared white person, followed by statistics on white people being mugged and murdered. What stereotypes would that be reinforcing? What bogus messages would you be calling out? This poster is no different.
[–]hardwarequestions -1 points0 points1 point 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
what isn't a social problem at this point? everything's a social problem. every little issue every persno has is extrapolated out into a massive society-wide problem we all must address and somehow eliminate. it's all bullshit.
[–]tigalicious 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
In what way? It is an ad focusing on one issue, which does happen to be about women, but it seems to me like the people who made it were careful not to demonize or blame men or anything like that. Other ads focus on domestic violence against men, and it's not sexist that they only talk about men. If your issue is that you aren't seeing any telling that side of the story, make one. The world could always use more people who care about equality.

i have never seen such an ad and would be overjoyed to see evidence of one.

I take it you don't spend a lot of time in the queer community then. In environments that aren't heterosexist, gendered messages are a lot less common. I'm not saying that there isn't a problem with not holding women accountable for domestic violence, but again, if that's an important issue to you, make ads for that. I don't think it's inherently sexist to draw attention to this issue.
[–]hardwarequestions 2 points3 points4 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
nice, didn't know that. my trips into the queer community are sporadic and short jaunts mostly, so yeah not a whole lot of time spent.
[–]eberkimer 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Quick question on that.... in that community, are there any ads targeting lesbians? The reason I ask, is that if they don't, then they are still showing only men as abusers. Just curious, as like hardwarequestions, I don't spend any time in that community.
[–]tigalicious 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
honestly I'm too lazy to find the ads online that I've seen in LGBT centers before, but yeah, I always thought it was cool of them to be so gender neutral. The problem of not addressing female violence towards men is still an issue, but I think that's more because they like having their space for supporting same-sex relationships. The only criticisms I tend to hear are that they aren't inclusive enough of bisexual and transgender people by focusing only on gay and lesbian relationship violence. But still, I can say personally that having more exposure to that environment actually did make a difference in helping me deal with domestic abuse with a non-stereotypical gender dynamic. It matters when you're never told that it doesn't have to be a man to be an abuser.
[–]eberkimer 1 point2 points3 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
As long as they are inclusive, then yeah....that's cool. And I'm certainly okay with the marketing of it to same sex. As long as they aren't ignoring the abuse committed by women, and saying only men are abusive. If you run across any, post them please. I think those are needed, and would like to see more of them put up here.
Thanks.

"people who made it were careful not to demonize or blame men or anything like that."
Yeah, i'm sure the female face and large manly hand are supposed to imply that it is women who are doing all this shit to women.

Awareness ads about domestic abuse in colleges are aimed towards preventing dating violence and violence within marriages, and the vast majority of people date and marry people of a different sex. Violence is a problem across all demographics, but addressing the straight, white, sexually active population in a college strikes a chord with the most people, no?
I get that the image has that connotation, but I also notice that you didn't have anything to say about the language in this ad, and that's because the makers of it were as careful as possible to present the issue without implying some sexist form of blame. It's a touchy issue, but I think they did it pretty well.
[–]ThePigman 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Oh please.
"addressing the straight, white, sexually active population in a college strikes a chord with the most people, no?"
This is irrelevant to the fact that it portrays the problem as male against female, and the fact that its figures are rubbish.
"I get that the image has that connotation,"
Enough said really.
"but I also notice that you didn't have anything to say about the language in this ad, and that's because etc..."
Is that why? Thanks for clarifying that for me. Also, it is not relevant how they word it - nothing changes the facts that the image portrays a female victim and a male perpetrator, and that the cited statistics are all about women. No go away.
I find that deeply offensive.
The uni is creating a culture of fear.
Put up another poster nearby about domestic violence with men as the victims and women as the perpetrators.
Also you should check on it frequently and when ever it's taken down, don't make a fuss, just put up another one.
[–]TheRealPariah 0 points1 point2 points 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's a blatant lie, but what's new?
Accidental falls are the leading cause of non-fatal injury to women in the USA. Uninteded accidents by motor vehicles were the second leading cause.
[–]ThePigman -1 points0 points1 point 14 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Balderdash. And i love the way they don't take "credit" for the lies. Nowhere does it tell us who the authors of this poster are.
